Celebrities lend their support in ‘war’ against cyber bullying, fake news

MO,17/4/2018, KUALA LUMPUR: A group of celebrities came together to address the issue of cyber bullying and fake news through the “Sebar Fakta, Bukan Dusta” (Spread Truth, Not Lies) campaign. Aiming to educate the people on the right to protect themselves against cyber bullying and fake news, the campaign also received support from the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission. The campaign was launched by Communications and Multimedia Minister Datuk Seri Dr Salleh Said Keruak.

“We understand that fake news and cyber bullying can threaten an individual and we are thankful for all the celebrities who have joined hands together in this fight. Cyber bullying and fake news affect every Malaysians, regardless of their status. “It is very important that we address this issue to ensure this does not become a Malaysian culture,” Salleh told reporters after the launch held at Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre.

The campaign, a brainchild of celebrity-cum-entrepreneur Neelofa, saw 16 celebrities joining hands to create a public service announcement (PSA) to address cyber bullying and fake news. Among them were Awal Ashaari, Scha Alyahya, Adibah Noor, Joe Flizzow, Caprice, Kavita Sidhu and Miss Universe Malaysia Jane Teoh, to name a few.

Tall Order Production Sdn Bhd managing director Datuk Hans Isaac, who produced the PSA, said the campaign will run till September on all social media and mainstream media platforms.

“This campaign is to start something new. We have about 30 million people (Malaysians) and even if we reach one per cent of them, we have achieved our target. It’s to get people to think before they repost or write anything on social media. “The people on social media are always using the power of the keyboard to spread negative things, why not we use the power of the keyboard to spread positivity?”

Also present during the launch were Media Prima Television Networks chief executive officer Johan Ishak and Star Media Group group managing editor and CEO Datuk Seri Wong Chun Wai.
