Employers to enjoy staggering 90pct discount on direct maid recruitment from Jan 1, 2018

MO,15/12/2017, PUTRAJAYA: Employers looking to directly hiring foreign maids will need only pay RM1,635 instead of RM18,000 to agents, beginning next year. Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the direct recruitment of foreign maids will enable employers to enjoy up to 90 per cent discount.

“The direct recruitment of foreign maids from source countries will reduce the cost and burden of employers as previously, they had to pay up to RM18,000 to the agents. “The cost of recruitment starting next year is only RM1,635. This does not include flight tickets and passport cost.

“At the same time, we have reduced the deposit from RM1,000 to RM500, and the processing cost from RM500 to RM250,” he told reporters after chairing a Cabinet meeting on foreign workers and illegal foreigners today. However, he said that employers who wish to hire maids from Indonesia and the Philippines will have to apply from the companies registered with their respective labour ministries starting Jan 1 next year.

Zahid said this is to adhere to the rules and regulations set by both countries. “As we all know, employers can directly recruit foreign maids via an online system beginning Jan 1, next year. “However, this only applies for other source countries apart from Indonesia and the Philippines. The governments of these two countries have decided that we cannot hire their citizens directly as maids. The only way is to apply from companies registered with their respective labour ministries.

“We have to respect their rules. Employers have to apply through the registered companies. They can then get the names of prospective maids and submit the names online,” he said. He said the maids must also go through health screenings, effective next year.

The health screening will be implemented before the foreign workers depart from their respective countries, a month after their arrival in the country, at end of their first and second year of employment in Malaysia, and subsequently once every two years, for as long as the maids are working in Malaysia.
