Esscom seizes RM17m worth of smuggled goods

MO,12/2/2018, LAHAD DATU: The Eastern Sabah Security Command (Esscom) has seized RM17 million worth of smuggled goods, including drugs and other illegal items, in 1,648 operations across Eastern Sabah Safety Zone (Esszone) last year. Federal police Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Zulkifli Abdullah said the meeting with security agencies showed they were able to handle threats including from extremists who attempt to cross into the state’s waters.

“It is important for the public to continue to remember the Tanduo intrusion so we can pay attention to prevent the recurrence of this kind of threats. “Now with our country facing the 14th General Election (GE14), I have also discussed ways to ensure that everything will go smoothly. “We will ensure that no outside elements will take advantage while we are busy with election preparations,” he said at the district marine police base here.

He said among the security improvements being made included road check points (RCP) at Tawau and Beluran. “RCP was suggested as one way to curb smuggling, We have discussed with the army and hope they will cooperate with Esscom and other security agencies to form these two proposed inspection centres,” he said, adding that he was confident the army would respond to the National Blue Ocean Strategy.

He said there was also a proposal to have three sea check points (SCP) in Sandakan, Pulau Siamil and Karakil in Kudat to curb smuggling and other crossborder crimes at sea. “With RCP and SCP, it would strengthen security in the state, and hopefully the people would be more confident in our teams.” he said.
