Essential items in Kedah sufficient in lead-up to CNY: KPDNKK

MO,12/2/2018, ALOR STAR: No shortage of essential items was detected in Kedah during the first two days of the Chinese New Year Season Price Control Scheme, which was launched on Saturday. State Industry and Investment, Domestic Trade, Cooperative and Consumerism committee chairman Datuk Ku Abdul Rahman Ku Ismail said that the state’s Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry (KPDNKK) has been carrying out regular inspections state-wide to ensure that supplies are enough to meet local demand during the festive season.

He added that the 13 items listed under the Price Control Scheme this Chinese New Year include eggs, chicken, pork and large prawns. “A total of 300 KPDNKK personnel in the state have been deployed to carry out regular inspections at shops, wet markets and hypermarkets to make sure that traders abide by the ceiling prices set under the scheme,” Ku Abdul Rahman told reporters after visiting Mydin Hypermarket here today.

Also present was the Kedah KPDNKK director Mohamad Fitri Hassan. Ku Abdul Rahman said that no trader was found to be violating any law in the first two days of the Price Control Scheme which ends on Feb 21. He added that during the Chinese New Year Price Control Scheme last year, the state KPDNKK recorded 17 offences, which saw RM1,700 in compounds issued.

The offences included failure to display price tags and selling controlled items above ceiling prices. “The state KDPNKK also seized 1,281 items during the 12-day operation last year. “We hope that this year, traders will follow regulations sets by the ministry,” he said. Ku Abdul Rahman added that KPDNKK will be working with Friends of KPDNKK, the People’s Volunteer Corp and the Consumer Squad to monitor the prices of essential items throughout the festive season.
