Father and son drowned, another family member missing in beach outing tragedy


MO,20/3/2018, BACHOK: An outing by the beach by eight members of a family turned tragic when two of them drowned while another went missing at Pantai Sri Telong near Melawi here. The two who drowned were identified as Wan Halem Wan Mustapha, 44, and his seven-year-old son Wan Muhammad Muzzammil Wan Halem.

Their bodies were discovered by other picnickers soon after the incident happened about 2.45pm. Wan Halem’s other son identified as Wan Ukkasyah,12, is still missing. A witness who only wanted to be known as Syam said he saw the father trying to rescue his two sons after seeing them facing difficulties while swimming at the beach. “However, he also faced the same difficulties and the three were then swept away by strong currents.

“Several other people later managed to grab the lifeless bodies of the two victims but another is missing,” he said. It is learnt that the family was from Kampung Bunut Payong in Kota Baru and they had organised the beach outing to coincide with the school holidays. Meanwhile, Bachok fire services and rescue station chief Muhammad Khairu Yusoff said 12 firemen rushed to the scene after receiving an emergency call at 2.58pm.

He said rescuers were still looking for the missing victim. As of 5pm, the search-and-rescue operation (SAR) comprising firemen, police and villagers had yet to locate Wan Ukkasyah.
