Many wooing prized Kota Melaka seat in this year’s contest

MO,16/4/2018, MELAKA: Multi-cornered battles are looming in Melaka, with the prized Kota Melaka parliamentary constituency in the limelight. Political analysts are predicting that the four former DAP lawmakers who quit the party in July would re-contest in their respective seats while PAS has confirmed joining the race by fielding candidates in 23 state and five parliamentary seats. However, the focus will be on Kota Melaka as all signs point to the four returning to “take revenge against the DAP leadership” for their acrimonious departure.

Kota Melaka MP Sim Tong Him and three former DAP state assemblymen – Goh Leong San (Duyong), Lim Jak Wong (Bachang) and Ching Choong Seong (Kesidang) – relinquished their positions in the party due to a long-standing feud with the party’s secretary-general Lim Guan Eng.  Goh, a former Melaka DAP chairman, is a no-nonsense politician and is expected to contest the Kesidang state seat as an independent. Chief Minister Datuk Seri Idris Haron anticipates at least 15 states seats to witness multi-cornered contests.

He said Barisan Nasional was expected to win in seats with multiple candidates. There is also talk that hot seats could witness six-cornered fights – an unprecedented development in the state. Melaka Pakatan Harapan chairman Khoo Poay Tiong acknowledged that there would be a stiff battle in Kota Melaka. “Anyone has the right to contest as independent and our strategy is to place our firepower at the battlegrounds,” he said. Khoo disagreed that a multi-cornered race would benefit Barisan as it could work in favour of the Opposition, too. “I foresee that the battle this time around would be tough for both sides,” he added.
