MIDDLE EAST: DIPLOMATIC CHALLENGE TO MALAYSIA

qatar modernMIDDLE  EAST CRISIS: A GLOBAL DIPLOMATIC CHALLENGE TO MALAYSIA

Saudi Arabia’s and the United Arab Emirates’  decisions to sever diplomatic ties with Qatar is placing Malaysia in a state of quandary. Both the Arab Saudi and Qatar is Malaysia’s best Islamic countries in trade and business.

Malaysia is trapped in the middle. Both nations are in a land of struggle. The Arab Saudi accused Qatar of supporting and funding the terrorist organizations such as Hamas and the Muslim Brotherhood. A shocking consequence, when Saudi Arabia and its three important allies – Egypt, Bahrain and the United Arab Emirates were severing diplomatic ties with Qatar in which Malaysia has a strong bilateral relations.

Moreover, Malaysia and Saudi Arabia had agreed on establishing a center of counterterrorism, which is one of the main agendas that had been agreed by Malaysia during the recent visit of King Salman of Saudi Arabia. Following that, the visit of Malaysia’s Defense Minister to the Kingdom, Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein,  envisioned that Saudi Arabia and Malaysia will be closely working together to fight against terrorism globally. Unexpectedly Malaysia was taken by surprise after the US President, Donald Trump visited the Kingdom, Arab Saudi had declared of severing ties with Qatar accusing the country was funding the terrorist organizations in the region and supporting Iranian path. Qatar, is alleged to be one of Malaysia’s best counterpart in the business and barter.

Islamic terrorist act is not a little issue in the Arab regions. And it is too far reaching our understanding of the substantial problems facing the Arab. But according to history, terrorism began to bloom because sectarian religious belief was predominating the Arab society and each sect has refused to live with other opinions. Later the issue of terrorism becomes widely known, prop up by the western ideas and it complicate the issue and term. One may wrongly interpret between the people who fought for freedom from the monarchical system as to construct a new governance, and a small group so-called “terrorists” or an establishment that does not hold any importance to the majority to create agitation in the region.

The United States’ involvement in the Arab region, has also made us suspicious whether the issue of terrorism is real. The US political games in the Arab world has been long known by the Arabs. The US is still remained steadfast to protect Israel from the belligerent states such as Iran. Fearing that Iran and other Arab States’ interference on the US foreign policy towards Arab countries has made the Saudi Arabia a puppet to the Western power.

Here much to the US vexation, when Iran the number one foe of the Israel appeared to be so striking after the Iranian revolution in1976. Fearing that other nations would be watching the Iranian path, the US has been using its schematic plan swaying the actual problems confronting the Arab people to a new invented semantic parable, that is “terrorism”.

We should have not forgotten the history as to why the US had decided to invade Iraq. One of the reasons, the US perceived Iraq as the most dangerous states for harboring the terrorist, the number one foe of the Israel and the country was accused of illegally building up nuclear plants. The US just went around the UN Security Council’s decision and attacked Iraq under the prerogatives of “preventive measure”.

Iran is the number two in the US list. Iran’s track record of its foreign diplomacy entices his neighboring country including Qatar. Iran’s successful revolution in1976, becomes an idol to the Arabs that the Iranian path would be a good example on how Arab people can overturn the US superficial power in the Arab regions.

The latest interview with Henry Kissinger with The Daily Squib unveils some truth about Kissinger’s prediction on the US affairs in the Arab World.

“ We told the military that we would have to take over seven Middle Eastern countries for their resources and they have nearly completed their job. We all know what I think of the military, but I have to say they have obeyed orders superfluously this time. It is just that the last stepping stone, i.e.Iran, which will really tip the balance. How long can China and Russia stand by and watch America cleanup? The great Russian bear and China sickle will be roused from their slumber and this is when Israel will have to fight withal its might and weapons to kill as many Arabs as it can. Hopefully,if all goes well, half the Middle East will be Israeli. Our Youngs have been trained well for the last decade or so in combat console games, It was interesting to see the new Call for Duty Modern Warfare 3 game, which mirror exactly what is to come in the near future with its predictive programming. Our youngs, the US and west, are prepared because they have been programmed to be good soldiers, cannon fodder, and they will be ordered to go out into the streets and fight those crazy Chins and Russkies, they will obey their orders. Out of the ashes we shall build a new society, a new world order, there will only be one superpower left, and that one will be the global government that wins. Don’t forget, the United States, has the best weapons, we have stuff that no other nation has, and we will introduce those weapons to the world when the time is right.”

For those who are dealing with politics either politicians or political analysts, or International Relations or International Diplomacy or Public Diplomacy, the US role in the Arab regions is factual. Nevertheless, the Saudi Arabia’s stern action against the terrorist groups is not single-minded and a decisive action.  It is the Pact, the pact that believed the status quo must be maintained. The US is the only superpower that can set a strong barricade against the strong wave of change.

As an Islamic country, Malaysia is respected by the Islamic world for its moderation especially the Saudi Arabia. For that reason Malaysia and Saudi Arabia is having a close ties in diplomatic relation, trade and commercial endeavor.

Moreover, the psychological proximity of both countries had intertwined through religious importance for decades. Arab Saudi is the land where the Prophet Mohammad was held and the richness of Islam was upheld in Mecca and Medina, which is enshrined in the Holy Quran that cannot be rubbed out in the psyche of the Muslims in Malaysia. The pilgrimage to Mecca, is an important factor to the Muslim in Malaysia and they are representing the majority of people in the government and other important sectors in the state.

Qatar, on the other hand is a small Island in the Gulf region that is having conflicts with Arab Saudi and its allies, is placed number two on the Malaysia’s diplomatic map. Even though Malaysia’s investment in Qatar looks very promising for the future of Malaysia but if it is dependable on the country which is nexus to terrorism as accused by Saudi Arabia and its friends, therefore Malaysia should take a neutral position.

Malaysia’s concept of moderation that has promulgated in its internal and external policy received a remarkable recognition among the OIC member countries. Its stands to fight terrorism, and the principles of non-alliance in the ASEAN had gained the confidence of the superpower country that Malaysia stands neutral.

Malaysia stands firmly on its neutrality principles. Even before any arrangement to combat terrorism being materialized with the Saudi Arabia, Malaysia is already and forever against Islamic terrorist act. No country in the Gulf Region is not aware with the Malaysia’s stand on the issue of Islamic extremism and terrorism. Malaysia has been stringent in its anti-terrorism laws and terrorist activities as well as students’ involvement in these activities were closely monitored and put to a halt.
Malaysia should not take any side in the gulf dispute, the relationship with Qatar should always be maintained. Merely being the intermediary of the crisis is beneficial. The essence of ZOPFAN – Zone of Peace, Freedom and Neutrality should continuously be the guiding principle in Malaysian foreign policy. And above all, always have in mind that Islam in Malaysia is amongst the exemplar of best practice to the eyes of modern Muslims throughout the world. (PUTRAJAYA INSIDER)
